News from the Region Rep

The South Central Region’s semi-annual meeting was held March 1, 2014 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Dallas, TX. Reports from the members of the executive committee were presented. Region Director Karen Hamilton announced that two SCR members, our own Karin Shaw from SANG and JoAnne Henderson from Shreveport Rose Chapter had been juried into the 2014 Through the Needles Eye exhibit. Both will receive a monetary award from the region, to be presented at Seminar 2014 in Baton Rouge. Region secretary, Pam Coller, has tendered her resignation because of her family’s move to California. The region nominating committee will be seeking a replacement for Pam. This replacement will fill the remainder of Pam’s term, and will also be eligible to run for an additional term. GCC Coordinator, Beth Newton, reported that two of the four GCCs offered have made, but registration does not end until March 31. This year’s Heart and Hand award will go to the person who has created and/or led the most challenging project taken on by a guild. (Suggestions for a SANG nominee should go to chapter president, Joan Vanderbrink.) Nominations are due to region by May 11. Now that the SCR newsletter, Stitches, is sent by email, it is imperative that each member makes sure a current email address is in the EGA national office records. If you wish to get this and other news emails from EGA, please be sure your email address is correct. A paper copy can be provided for those who do not have email (contact Joyce or Joan). Tickets for the annual opportunity drawing for a trip to Seminar 2015 are now available for $10 each or 12 for $100. (Tickets will be available at all stitch-ins, meetings, and the May luncheon.) Registration for Seminar 2014 is still open. Seminar 2015 in Lubbock will be limited to 150 participants. Seminar 2016 will be hosted by Greater Dallas Chapter. Theme is Boots and Bluebonnets; location is the Westin Park Central in Dallas. EGA Seminar 2015 to be held at the Marriott River Center has selected its classes. A contest for a stitched logo has been announced. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs. Following the business meeting, national Director of Education, Leslie Gagliardi spoke on the many educational opportunities provided by EGA to its chapters and members. After lunch, Sharon Davis led a beading class. The project was a scissor fob inspired by the EGA Seminar 2015 logo. The pattern and several others will available at a future date.

Short Threads from the Needle’s Eye…

I hope all of you are busy making bookmarks for the outreach for South Central Region. They are my favorite drag along tote bag. I don’t need great light and almost know some patterns by heart. We need to turn them in at the May 3 luncheon.

Ellen Riojas Clark, Ph.D., is our speaker on Huipiles, a cultural blouse. They looked pretty in the September 2013 Needle Arts Magazine. The coupon is in this newsletter. The deadline is April 30.

We also have a coupon for the Tanya Berlin Hapsburg lace class on May 10 and September 13 at The Forum and the summer project of the Hapsburg Scissor Case. They are both beautiful pieces. The deadline for both is April 15 so Tawney can order the kits.

Needleworkers need to be careful where they sit because their needles can show up anywhere. I found one on the driver’s seat in my car. I have no idea how it got there. Maybe it was in my clothes or worked its way out of my purse made of fabric. I did a cross stitch pillow that said “A needle in the hand is worth two in the couch.” I could change it to “or in your car seat.” I don’t like hearing the vacuum cleaner pick them up either.

I hope to see all of you at our May 3 luncheon at Ft. Sam Houston Golf Club and hear Dr. Clark’s presentation.

Congratulations Karin Shaw

The excerpt below came from STITCHES, our regional newsletter. Congratulations Karin.

“Congratulations to two talented SCR stitchers, whose pieces were juried into the upcoming “Through the Needle’s Eye” National Exhibit. Karin Shaw of the San Antonio Chapter and JoAnne Henderson of the Shreveport Rose Chapter both will receive a cash award from SCR. In addition, JoAnne has been named the SCR Region award winner and she will receive the beautiful SCR ribbon stitched by Pat Lufholm. The exhibit will be traveling around the country for the next couple of years, and will make a stop in Lubbock for the SCR Region Seminar in June, 2015.” – Karen Hamilton, SCR Region Director.
